This part of the roof shows great variation dependent upon availability of material. In vernacular architecture, roofing material is often vegetation, such as thatches, the most durable being sea grass with a life of perhaps 40 years. In many Asian countries bamboo is used both for the supporting structure and the outer layer where split bamboo stems are laid turned alternately and overlapped. In areas with an abundance of timber, wooden shingles and boards are used, while in some countries the bark of certain trees can be peeled off in thick, heavy sheets and used for roofing.

The drawback of choosing this roofing type, however, is it is too heavy. Additional support is needed if you decide to change from a certain type of lighter roofing material to built-up roof. You need to have additional joists and support posts added to your home’s frame before you can have this type of roofing. Failing to do so might result in your roof hanging low or collapsing altogether. The lifespan of your roof will also be significantly shorter if proper support is not built prior to the installation of your built-up roof.

All of our equipment and scaffolding had to be secured from the general public. The roof had multiple slopes of 3/12, 5/12 and 9/12. To move materials and manpower we designed a scaffold system in partnership with our scaffolding subcontractor that utilized Beta Hoists and Bokker Hoists. We also used a crane to supplement the main system. Safety was of paramount importance and all workers were tied off when on the roof. Midland is extremely proud to have not had a single injury during the project. Central Indiana weather can also be unpredictable and we had to deal with rain, frost and wind.
